  • Yamaha 6YC Command Link Information Center & NMEA-2000

I have purchased one of the new 6YC Command Link Information Centers. Unfortunately, I did not understand there were kits so I purchased my components separately. It appears Yamaha only provides instruction manuals with kits so I've had to dig for information online at a time there is very limited information available. I believe I'm only a few questions from having this thing figured out.

Any help you guys can be would be greatly appreciated and perhaps this post could serve to help others with the necessary components and wiring of the system! At this point I believe I have figured out that the Yamaha Command Link is simply a propitiatory version of the NMEA-2000. If you come across something that is incorrect, please let me know so we can edit the post to help others that may read it.

Much like the the NMEA system, CL must have power, connections to a main trunk, and terminators. If CL is to be connected to the NMEA-2000 system, it will require the Yamaha CL Gateway Harness and another short device pigtail to connect the gateway to a CL Hub. When CL is connected to a NMEA-2000 backbone, it does not power it and neither will the NMEA system power the CL system. Each system requires its own power source and each is limited to only one source of power. While I describe the device pigtails, harnesses with the white 4-pin device connectors on each end, with the function they serve in my installation, they're actually interchangeable with each other barring length issues and the different part numbers are simply denoting the different lengths. The pigtail used at the engine is long enough to run through a rigging sleeve or hose and connect to a hub mounted within approximately 18-24" of where it passes through the deck or hull. The reason 2 hubs are required for most every installation is that the only harness long enough to run between the motor and the console is the buss harness which is 25'. There are no device to device pigtails that length.

Here is the system and components I'm working on for my new boat:

    Lowrance HDS-7 (NMEA-2000 capable)
    Fusion BB300R (NMEA-2000 capable)
    NMEA-2000 backbone, T's, terminator's, drop lines, etc.

    Yamaha F150LB
    2 Yamaha Hubs 6Y8-81920-01-00
1 Yamaha Engine Device Pigtail 6Y8-82521-31-00
    1 Yamaha Buss Harness 6Y8-82553-31-00
1 Yamaha Gauge Device Pigtail 6Y8-82521-11-00
    1 Yamaha Power Harness 6Y8-83553-01-00
    1 Yamaha GPS/Fuel Harness 6Y8-8356N-01-00
    1 Yamaha Gateway Harness 6Y9-8A2D0-20-00
1 Gateway Adapter Device Pigtail 6Y8-82521-11-00
2 Yamaha Grey End Terminator Caps 6Y8-85371-01-00
1 Yamaha Red Power Cap 6Y8-82582-01-00
3 Yamaha White Device Caps 6Y8-82582-11-00

I am describing the Yamaha CL Hub inputs from left to right.

I have mounted the 1st hub at the stern.
I mounted the 2nd hub within my console.
I capped the 1st hub's power input with a red cap.
I capped the 1st Hub's buss input with a grey terminator cap.
I connected the engine harness between the engine connector block and the 1st hub's 1st device input.
I connected the two pink leads beneath the motor cowl next to the white CL block together to turn my tilt/trim data into digital rather than analog signal.
I capped the remaining two device inputs on the 1st hub with white caps.
I connected the power harness between the remaining yellow ignition wire and ground & the 2nd hub's power input.
I connected the 1st hub to the 2nd hub using the 1st hubs last buss input and the 2nd hub's 1st buss input.
I connected the gauge pigtail between the 6YC Info Center Gauge & the 2nd hub's 1st device input.
I connected the gateway harness between NMEA-2000 backbone & the 2nd hub's 2nd device input using a CL pigtail.
    I capped the 2nd hub's 3rd device input with a white cap.
I capped the 2nd hub's 2nd buss input with a grey terminator cap.

Each hub has one grey terminator cap and one end of the buss harness plugged into the buss inputs. The entire system is powered from the single power harness within the console. All hub inputs either have a power harness, buss harness, device, or cap.

I connected the GPS/Fuel Harness to the 6YC Info Center Gauge and installed a Moeller 2 wire reed type switch on my tank. I ran the ground wire to the common ground and a the sending wire to my console. The fuel harness has a white wire that has a (+) label and a blue wire that has a (-) label along with two sender wire sets containing pink and black wires.

This is where I have questions.

    1) Am I correct in understanding the white and blue wires are for the older NMEA-0183 system and are unused in the newer NMEA-2000 system?

    2) Am I correct in believing the pink wire with the black stripe is the lead for tank #1?

    3) Does my Yamaha CL Network have all the components necessary and are they connected in the right order?

I hope this reads well enough to comprehend. I think I know the answers but with the money I've spent on this it would reassuring to have someone better versed in the Yamaha Command Link system review what I've done and confirm that I correctly understand the system before I power it up the first time.

    1) No, the blue and white are for NMEA 2K data as I recall.

    2) I think so but I don't remember, but you can hook it up and test without causing any damage. I could not find in my service manual in a quick search.

    3) Don't know because I did not wade thru all of your data. A cursory look appears good.

New to this site and there is great information. Thank you!!!

I'm expanding to a 2nd hub as well like the OP (I already have a hub and all device connections are used). Is it necessary to have a red cap for the power on the 2nd hub as well as white caps for unused device connections?

I think I have all components (2nd hub, buss wire to connect two hubs, gateway to NMEA 2k and pigtail to connect gateway to hub) to hook my Lowrance unit to my existing NMEA 2k except these caps if they're needed.

I've searched this forum to find this answer but maybe I missed it...

      Thanks!

        Caps are an option.
