  • How to get MPH on command link gauges?

    Hi Ive got the square command link gauges-all info is displayed on both gauges except mph and trim!
    How do I get MPH to show instead of 2 lines! ? Im assuming I can connect my Garmin GPSmap to it to output data from that.?
    My Garmin is connected to the Yamaha bus-Ive got engine info coming up on my Garmin unit.
    Also, im surprised I can,t see engine trim on the gauges either-is this a setup issue?
    Thanks

    In order for the engine ECM to report trim position to a Command Link gauge
    (or to a NMEA 2000 plotter)
    the two pink wires on the engine harness must be joined;

    the engine leaves the factory with each wire capped off:

    the caps get removed and the male & female ends plugged together:

      The back of the speedometer or Speed Fuel gauge
      has two plugs -
      a four wire plug, the same as the tachs have

      and a 6-wire plug with two pinks, two blacks,
      a blue and a white

      You will need to connect the blue and the white to get speed from the Garmin;

      tell me the Garmin model for specifics

      (you'll also need to check/change some menu settings
      in both the Garmin and the CL gauge)

        Thanks- not near the boat at the moment-is the connector on the engine under the cover or dash side of the harness?
        I have a Garmin GPSmap 700 series (2011) Im sure Ive seen blue, white and other wires taped up and not used on the plotter harness-so im assuming blue from plotter to blue on gauge and white to white?
        Thanks again Fairdeal!

          Two marine electronic companies using the same color convention for NMEA 0183 wires?

          The Yamaha wires you need are on the back side of the Yamaha gauge:

          From the Garmin harness, you'll only use the small blue wire,
          that is Port 1 Talker "+"
          so you connect that to the Yamaha "+" which is the white wire

          The Garmin has no matching "-" wire to connect to the Yamaha "-"
          so connect the Yamaha blue wire to "ground"
          (the same electrical ground that the Garmin black wire uses -
          could be the exact same spot but doesn't have to be)

          Then you'll need to go into the Garmin menu system
          Configure > Communications > NMEA 0183 Setup > Serial Port 1 > Output
          and set it to "NMEA Std"

          You might also have a look under
          Configure > Communications > NMEA 0183 Setup > System
          and make sure that "GPRMC" is set as "enabled"

          Then on the Yamaha gauge
          go into the menu to select "GPS ON" as the speed sensor
          see p 24 or 49 as appropriate in the Owners Manual

              Only one of those wires is "pink" - and it has a black stripe;
              that pair of wires is used if you have two fuel tanks.

              Since you only have one fuel tank,
              they are just 'plugged off'.

              The pair of pink wires that let the engine ECM broadcast trim position
              are not at the gauges -
              they are inside the engine cowling -
              usually at the bottom, in the front,
              coming off the big black engine cable,
              just before it ends in a large black plug
              that connects to the cable that runs up to the helm.
