good little motor water pump recently went out and I replaced with kit ,I believe properly, also shift boot and shaft seals, the rest of the lower unit was done last year including bushings. Oil was good before replacement. tank tested afterwards checked oil and there was only one ounce of milky oil left with a slight pressure hiss when I opened oil screw. tore down inspected put back and run again, same thing tore down entire lower unit and cannot find any reason for the problem. Everything looks better than good maybe. Has anybody heard of this before ?

"pressure hiss" is that sucking air in or pushing out??
If a vacuum (sucking) suggests gears/bearings get hot which pushes the oil out past the seals (expansion) and when it cools the contraction sucks in water.
If this is happening suggest bearings are suspect. Slowly turn prop to check for binding and/or roughness - without oil (drain if refilled). you could probably do the test by running engine in gear (F and Rev) and feel if it gets hot (AFTER TURNING OFF MOTOR).

89 lower unit
first time out only the pump kit and shaft seals were replaced with no prior problems. IT might seem like a dumb question but its pumping water into oil and both out rather quickly witch would almost suggest exhaust gas rather than tolerance but how is that possible the tell tale runs good. I will examine all possible than reassemble and run vac and pressure test. Thank You

89 6hp pushes water into oil and both out of lower unit
I havnt got to work on this unit due to severe lack of time, But I did get the powerhead off so far. It does hold pressure for over 24 hrs cant get better than that I think. I didnt have the problem until I changed the pump and run it in test barrel , had good oil before the fact even though it over heated . Ive come to the thought that I may have a blown gasket or a cracked block. Blocks are only $300 witch would be worth it for this motor. But I would like to tear it down in inanvasive manner so I dont have to do the bearings and timing if not needed. Main thing I`d like to find a pictorial guide of some sorts to help me on my quest , I already have a hard manual for this motor and as you probably know they are always lacking in the picture dpt. wether by quality or quantity. Have any suggestions or am I going about it wrong

as described when I fire motor up within a few minutes it evacuates the lower unit leaving it with a touch of milky oil and pressurized but all was ok before water pump change though it did overheat a bit on the lake but yet it will hold pressure in lower unit for well over 24 hours aperently the problem hasn`t blown the seals in lower unit, but exactly where the fluid is leaving the lower unit I dont know
