Constant Voltage Alternators

I have a feeling I was wrong on the phase to phase thing.
it looks like on that plug, the alligator clip would be hooked to ground from that u tube link I posted.
Did you watch that one about the kind of probes?
talks about the 1 M ohm probes being 1X, 10 M ohm being 10 X etc also
back when I was involved in the meter and relay/ testing group was in my 1st years as electrical apprentice.
Early 80s, so I am very rusty on this.
I would hook the probe to the hot wire and see what things look like, and then hook the clip to the ground to see if that cleans it up someLast edited by 99yam40; 03-12-2022, 01:42 PM.

I watched both videos. Very informative.
When you mention that plug, are you referring to the picture of the wall outlet? The scope I have has the ground connected to the shield of the BNC cable. Therefore, I don't think the alligator clip needs to be attached when measuring 120 C volts. But we shall see. Will be running some tests this afternoon. Too cold and windy to be doing much outside.

I got it to indicate a sine wave from connecting just the tip of the probe to a hot lead from the wall outlet. Frequency seems to be correct as it is numerically displayed. But the voltage is suspect. It is not displaying a peak to peak or RPM voltage. Just divisions that are set in 50 volt increments. I am seeing a little over three divisions on both the up side and the down side of the wave.
Tried seeing the ripple wave of the 14 DC volt output from a belt alternator. Mumbo jumbo.
I have a lot to learn.
