  • Lower Unit Paint Peeling

Anyone have an idea what's happening to the paint on my lower unit (2016, 250 h.p.). It's just peeling off. I didn't hit anything or clean it with any caustic chemicals. Is it likely to be a defect in the way the primer was applied? How can I fix it? Thank you!

why are we not seeing aluminum from the place the paint peeled off?
is that something like bondo we see in the pic?

We think it looks like a repair so it is anyone’s guess how well the preparation was done.

Not sure why we are not seeing aluminum; I wondered the same thing but thought maybe we are seeing a primer? I'm the original owner of the engine, so no repair has been done previously.

Thanks for the replies. I'll ask the dealer who sold me the engine to take a look. As I mentioned, I bought the engine new, and never had any repairs done to the lower unit.

what did the dealer have to say about what was under the paint that peeled off?

Not much; just that he's "seen it before" and to bring it in for a touch up. Not warranty work, of course. Did not address the "color" under the paint (rather than just seeing metal), but he has not actually seen the engine yet.

Dealer has just seen the photo--same one I posted on the forum.

UPDATE--that part of the engine has a plastic cover and the base color of the plastic is yellowish. That's what we are are seeing where the paint has peeled away.
