Powerhead replacement

1. Is it simple or difficult to replace the powerhead on an LZ250 HPDI?
a. will I need some sort of gasket set
b. any special tools other then metrics
2. Is the head the same for both normal and counter rotation with the direction change in the lower unit or is the rotation strictly in the powerhead?

1. Is it simple or difficult to replace the powerhead on an LZ250 HPDI? In the scheme of things it is not difficult. Take lots of digital photos. Remove all of the accessories from the failed power plant and install them on the new power plant. Then, install the new "dressed" power plant onto the motor.
a. will I need some sort of gasket set If buying a new block from Yamaha it will come with the gaskets needed.
b. any special tools other then metrics Nope, just metric wrenches. Plus a torque wrench.
2. Is the head the same for both normal and counter rotation with the direction change in the lower unit or is the rotation strictly in the powerhead? Blocks are one and the same for the normal rotation and counter rotation models. Only the lower unit is different.

Depending upon why the original block failed you might need some other stuff. For instance, if a cylinder failed it might have taken out a fuel injector or damaged the reed set for the failed cylinder.

To remove and replace a dressed power plant is a piece of cake. There are shops to which you can send your failed dressed block and they will send a new or refurbished block back to you dressed with your accessories.

Thanks Boscoe - you've given me great info. I just have to decide if and then find the cash to cover the repair. I am competent to do the swap out and have the equipment. Would probably look at after market shops, although I will check the head price with Yamaha. Just don't know if I want to be bothered since I just put this motor on the boat last year. You know "hole in the water you pour money into". We'll see where it all falls out. Thanks again.
