  • '98 Yama salt series 2 150 oil issue

Hello new here thought this would be best place for some info.
Have put over 100 hours in the motor this year no problems. Over weekend my oil level gauge turned yellow to add oil. Went back in added a gallon, gauge turned green, full.
Left harbor throttled up and oil alarm went off, obviously had oil, popped cowl saw the on engine tank was on low. Added oil to it ran all day burned through that oil and the alarm went off again.

So since I added oil to the big in boat tank the engine is only pulling oil from the small tank.

When I added oil to the big tank the meter went from yellow to green meaning my float switch is working?

So then I used the emergency fill button on the engine, when you push it you can here to oil pump on the big tank kick on and it raises the level on the small tank. This would mean the oil pump is working right?

What next I'm not sure what the problem could be, maybe a sensor if they have one? Please help me get this figured out. Sorry for the long first post

    no big tank little tank.
us remote tank for the hull.
    engine tank for the engine.
    it keeps confusion down.

when the remote tank level was above 1/2 and the engine tank was low you should have seen 3 bars flashing, audible and RPM reduction.
if you can refill the tank manually then most likely the well maintained remote tank oil filter is clogged and the engine can consume oil faster than it can transfer from the remote.

the oil indicates in the tach are a great aide in troubleshooting if you look at them and know why the light up.

Thanks for a fast reply. So do you feel I should try changing the oil filter next?

One other thing when I used the emergency switch to fill the engine tank it filled very slowly, is this normal? If not that could be due to the clogged filter as well?

          2 stroke oil tanks

Have a Z250 HPDI and blew the #2 piston several weeks ago. Out fishing and alarm and flashing bars went off. Learned too late exactly what it meant. Remote tank had some oil, couldn't see how much, so added another gallon. Observed that the engine tank was extremely low, hence the alarm. "Assumed" the remote would fill the engine tank - it didn't. I was 25 miles out on the water and kept throttling in and out of safe mode to get back in. Blew the piston. Investigation reveals the remote tank will fill the engine tank using the emergency switch but will not get above the low indicator line on its own. This big engine used the engine tank supply quicker then it was replaced. Blowing the piston was my fault, not getting enough oil was the remote tanks failure. Undecided what to do, may sell boat as is.

So you didn't figure out why the remote tank wasn't filling the engine tank? That sounds like same issue as mine

Also just went through the entire oil system section in my Manuel and according to that there is no actual oil filter??

Do the self check for the motor.

Make sure the remote tank is filled. Drain the engine tank by removing the plastic sump from the tank. Clean, reattach and secure the sump.

Make sure the battery is fully charged.

Turn the key to the ON position only. The horn should sound. The lights/icons on the tachometer should flash. The oil pump should begin to run. The horn and flashing tachometer lights will stop when the main engine mounted tank is about half filled. The pump will run for three minutes or until the engine tank becomes filled. Whichever comes first.

If the engine tank does not fill within three minutes time the oil strainer is partially clogged or perhaps there is a restriction in the system between the remote tank and the main engine mounted tank. Or possible the voltage to the pump is weak if there is excessive voltage drop to the pump. Or possibly the pump itself is weak. More than likely it will be the strainer.

The strainer is at the back of the remote oil tank.

Ok did the test and the engine tank did fill but very slowly did not fill before the alarm went off. Now there is a small white fitting in the hose shaped the way the diagram looks, it has an arrow pointing into the tank. Is this the filter I should be changing?

Yes. But I would think the arrow should be pointing towards the pump.
