  • Adding rectifier to an F8

Perhaps someone with more knowledge can help me out. I would like to add charging capabilities to my 2018 F8LMHB. I understand I need a rectifier. I have 2 empty green connections on the outboard already, assuming this means I already have the charging coil.

Do I just need to order the 6G1-81970-00-00 from Yamaha? Do I also need a regulator/what part number would that be?

As for the actual install it looks simple enough. But if someone could run me through it that might be helpful. I dunno if it will come with instructions or not, green connections should be pretty easy, ground to the block where other grounds are attached. Then run from there, along with the positive to my battery (positive to my Perko switch common with an inline fuse) It seems easy enough but strangely cannot find many Youtube videos specific to my F8. Just wanna be sure I can do this before I order the part.

lighting coil furnishes electricity to run lights and charge batteries
I thought usually you install a rectifier regulator all in one

I believe the part 6G1-81970-00-00 is considered a rectifier and regulator all in one. being direct from Yamaha I think it's just plug and play, but lack of info online seems to be a problem. Was hoping someone familiar with the process can chime in

Its plug and play. Make your own harness with an inline fuse to run to your battery. If for some reason you run the engine without the battery unhook the regulator at the two green wires. It needs to be connected to a load...the battery or else risk burning up the rectifier. The reason for that I cannot remember of hand. Boscoe would know.

Thank you all for the replies. And boscoe99 for the image. I am not sure where my 6G1-81970-00-00 came from, probably someone else's writeup on an older model. But 68T-81960-00-00 does appear specific to my F8. I wonder what the difference is between the two

Put the 6G1 prefix part number in the search box to bring up that part. You can then see what models that it is used on.

Both are R/R's but designed for different Yamaha outboard motors. A 6AW prefix for instance would be for an F350.

Is it going to harm anything using this setup with my dual battery and Perko switch? Both the main motor, and kicker charging wired to the "common" terminal? NOT planning on both outboards running at the same time, EVER. Just worried about extra current backflowing, up the positive lead on my main while *****ing.
