I was able to get it into a Yamaha service place yesterday and had a tech look at it to determine if it needed a belt. When he first saw the black stuff, he said “yeah, it needs a belt”. But then we started to look at the belt and it shows no signs of wear, cracking or rubbing. None. To confuse the matter more, when u try to scoop up any of what looks like belt debris, it actually isnt so much a solid, but almost like a paste/grease. The tech didnt have a lot of time to offer me as he was doing me a favour of looking between his scheduled jobs. We couldnt find any oil leak or anything that would have thrown grease there. It is around the oil dipstick and oil filter area mainly so it may be some dirt (it spent 3 hours in a dusty dusty road) mixed with some of the oil left from checking dipstick etc...
For now he says belt is fine, clean the area, run it and keep an eye out for anything unusual. Bit of a head scratcher
Maybe motor has never been cleaned since 1999?….I go over my motor with an old toothbrush and some light oil or WD-40, some clean rags and an air hose….if you keep motor clean(inside the cowling and outside the cowling) you’ll find it a lot easier to see leaks, parts missing, things getting loose, etc.,etc…..Dust, dirt , oil and black bacteria growth can get pretty gross under that cowling. Remove cowling and lubricate anything that moves, especially those cowl latches, that if ignored long enough and run in salt water have been known to lock up tight and not open…then you have real problems getting the cowl off for routine service.
Motor was spotless when i bought it. This stuff showed up after i ran it about 10 hours. I spoke to original owner and asked about timing belt and he said “what belt”? That tells me its likely 20 plus years old. Oddly enough, i found a yamaha belt video online where tech shows an aged but not overly used belt. It was dropping dust like particles of rubber through out the cowl. One thing the tech noticed that may have led him astray was the residue was concentrated to one side. But think about it. This stuff is very small and not extremely heavy so it was likely getting pushed around by the air coming off the spinning belt and gears. Then any that landed in bits of oil near the dipstick stuck.
Either way, it appears to be original belt but i cant be sure. Changing this could be a small amount to save a huge headache!!
