  • 2000 f80 vibration

I just bought a used 2000 f80 four stroke. It was lightly used by previous owner which also means it likely sat a lot. I am new to this motor but it does two things that concern me. 1. It has a slight whine or squeal that from what i have read is likely shaft bushing that need greasing. 2. It vibrates a little more than i would expect. At idle if the motor is tilted all the way down, the vibration can be felt throughout the entire boat.

I understand it is likely due for a tune up, plugs, sync carbs etc.... My biggest concern is horror stories ive read about counterbalance failures. Does the 2000 f80 have the plastic counterbalances? I wasnt able to determine that from the internet. I know there are a lot of threads about the 150s but none specific about the f80.

Just trying to decide if this is a tune up issue or if i should stop running the motor until it get looked at type of issue. It makes good power and pushes the boat with ease.

First thing to do is pull and inspect the spark plugs….may have a fouled plug..

Looking at the parts diagram: https://www.boats.net/catalog/yamaha...r/2000/f80tlry
      I don't see a balancer.

It is carbureted, which often, small passages gets clogged/varnished up with old fuel left in it.. I'd probably do a tune up and look at the carbs..

Well i am glad it doesnt have the counterbalance. For now ill change the plugs and sync the carbs. I know it ran only a handful of times a year. I guess Ill look into greasing the shaft bushings too.

Might want to R&R the water pump.. The smaller the engine and especially the longer they sit, the more likely the impeller "took a set" and needs replacement.

You don't want the impeller to come apart and clog up the cooling system..

Previous owner said it was done last year but we all know how those stories go. Lol. Probably wise to do it. My dads old 40hp yamaha was fugged up by impeller parts blocking passages so it would overheat at low power settings.

Without running out and lifting cowling, how can i tell if its Tlry vs Txry?

That picture is of some debris down by the oil dipstick. This engine was spotless when i picked it up and now there is what appears to be very fine chunks of belt around the engine. My dad was arguing with me that going back n fourth into neutral and forward couldnt damage anything. Could this cause belt wear? Oddly enough belt looks good but there are small bits or staining on the belt sprockets.

I believe the “x” in TLRX means its a 99?

Yeah. Its a 99. Original owner said 2000 but thats likely when he bought it. Anyhow, look like it needs a timing belt.

Ok. So here is the big problem. I am in Canada and all the local dealers are saying I cant even get a timing belt, let alone find someone to replace it. Do i have 400lbs of garbage here now???
