I have a 98 2 stroke 15hp that needs a lower unit. I found a guy with a 03 4 stroke 15 lower for $250. The part numbers are close my 98 is 63V-45300-00-4D, his lower is 63V-45300-03-4D. I compared the two and they look the same but didn't want to purchase without confirming with someone. Can anyone help me?

Wait for someone who knows to answer your question, (will it fit) and NOT go off on a tangent..
Just ignore him, he'll go away..Scott

the 3 is the design change code, basically meaning it is a super-cession to the old part.
I believe it will work, but I'm a bit of a noob so might pay to get Rodbolt's or Boscoes inputLast edited by greasyshaft; 06-03-2015, 06:32 AM.

The Yam parts book shows a 1998 15MSHV as using a 63V-45300-02-4D.
The 2003 F15MSHB is shown as using a 66M-45300-01-4D.

***, now that a lot of info, lol. I am trying to get his exact model # and will post it. Thank you very much for helping out. The previous owner of my engine struck something with the lower creating a hole in the lower and it filled with salt water. Then they let the motor sit for a couple of years. I was thinking about trying to rebuild it but the inside is a full of rusted parts.

If you have access to the F15 lower unit I would trial fit it to your motor. It may very well work and work just fine. Unfortunately, I don't have access to any Yamaha data that says yea or nay definitively.
If the bolt pattern in the same, if the shift shaft is the same length, if the drive shaft is the same length then the odds are good that it will work.
One thing you can do if you have some time on your hands is to open both parts catalogs. The one for your motor and the one for the F15. You can compare every part used in one lower unit with the parts that are used in the other lower unit. I did a quick look see and the majority of the parts are one and the same.
Just keep in mind if and when repairs may be needed to the different lower unit you will use the parts catalog for it to source your parts.
Let us know what you decide to do.
