  • Using Yamaha 6YC with Garmin

    Hi everyone,
    I know this topic has been covered in the past but I wanted to know if specifically if you needed the actual 6YC head unit (the display) to run a feed from the engine to a display screen like garmin. I was thinking I could just link up the smart connector directly to the display unit via a NMEA2000 kit. I am trying to work out if I need both screens or can save on the expense of the 6YC itself.
    Thanks

    No. Use of a 6YC is not required.

    Both the 6YC and the Garmin are just listeners.

      Many thanks and do you know what equipment or kit I need for a 2006 Yamaha 115?

        Fairwinds should be along shortly to provide you with some options.

              Hi again
              I’ve been told my engine won’t support NMEA 2000 but I was under the impression anything from 2006 onwards would have this function? Its a 2006 F115AET …. any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

                the red arrow points to the Command Link/NMEA 2000 plug;
                white, w/ yellow tape, two wires (one blue, one white)

                look for it in that spot on your engine

                  Despite this being a 2006 I don’t seem to have the NMEA cable. Should it be located somewhere or is there a chance this engine didn’t come with it? Ie, Pre Lan?
                  Any ideas on what I can try next?

                    Very strange. OK -
                    on the front of the engine, directly above the regulator/rectifier,
                    is the ECM;
                    there are numbers scribed into it, "68V- number - number"

                    what does your ECM have?

                    if the "-XX" is "-40" (or higher) then it is CL/NMEA 2000 capable
                    (but still a mystery where the CL plugs are)

                    if it is less than 40 (such as -21) then it is NOT,
                    and explains why the electrical harness appears to lack the CL plugs

                      Thanks for all your help here. Turns out I have the older model despite this being a 2006. All the best!
