2002 F115 Analog tach became erratic last season, this year goes to top scale when switched on. How can I check tach function before purchasing a new one? And are these analog tachs still available?

If the needle goes to the top of the scale with just the key on, and remains there, the tachometer is kaput. Presumption being that the needle stays there when the motor is running.
