  • 2002 Yamaha 50 HP two stroke

My yamaha 50 hp two stroke started up and ran just fine two weeks ago. This weekend, it started fine, idled fine, ran at low throttle fine. I could not get it past 3000 rpm. When I put the controls u wide open, I could feel the boat surge to full throttle for a few seconds, but then settle back to 3000 rpm. I changed the fuel seperator and ran fine. Hopped in the boat later and same thing. Low speed/idle works fine. Can't get high throttle/RPMs. Changed all the gas and no difference. Dropped it off at the marina and he is not sure what is wrong yet. Any ideas?

I will take a guess since no testing was done

Is there an easy way to test if the fuel pump works?

Remove fuel pump with 2-10mm hex bolts, leave fuel hoses hooked up, pump primer bulb and check for any fuel leaking out of small hole/port on back of pump....there should be none. Not a bad idea to replace this pump every few years(or hopefully before it fails)....just like with the water pump....

Besides the fuel pump, are there other potential causes?

By the way, I pumped the bulb and the engine RPM did not change. Does that mean that it likey is not the fuel pump?
