      Not a mystery really, if you want to go to the trouble to map out the circuitry.
      Because it has two switches it was designed that both can't operate simultaneously to avoid positives connecting to negatives (spark, burn.. kaput).
      And I am assuming you have ruled out breaks within wire! That you haven't moved the wires that they are now touching internally.

      Just remember things can seem strange with wiring when shorts, or open circuits occur, and they can be intermittent.

        Just moving things around does not fix the problem in the long run.
        If open to moisture the wire will corrode and cause more problems .
        you need to repair the wiring

          2 coats of liquid tape and moved the wires so that nothing was rubbing them.
