• not running to potential

I have a pair of 1997 Yamaha 225's (carbs)that ran fine before winter. Now motors are very hard to start(start easily cold, when warm act as thought they are flooded) and once running seem to be smoking a lot more than usual. Would not accelerate above 4400 rpm. Changed spark plugs, tried again, boat seemed to want to act right for about 15 seconds then kind of fell right back to where it wouldn't accelerate above 4400 rpm. No engine missing, no warning horns, nothing with the props has been changed.

parrot,
If your motors were allowed to set up for more than a month in off season without being run and were not "winterized" (fogged the motor and added fuel stabilizer to tank), then your carbs could be clogged up with gum/varnish.
You might try a shock treatment with RingFree or Seafoam - sometimes that works. If not, then pull the jets of the carbs and squirt some Berryman's Chemtool into the orifices. If that does not work, then the carbs will have to be torn down, cleaned and kit installed.
Good luck ,
