  • New 70 4stroke idle

Hello, I've got a year old 70 four stroke outboard. Love the motor, only issue I have is, once you've had the boat up on plane, and lower throttle back down, it idles pretty high for several minutes. This wouldn't be a big deal, except when pulling into the dock, or continuing to *****. It goes into gear hard with this high idle. Any help would be great. Motor is under warranty, but if it's a simple fix, I'd like to handle it myself. Oh, and it's not the tiller model, if they made this motor with one

You do not want to be jacking with a motor still under warranty and nulling the warranty, take it in and have it fixed.

New motors should not have these type of problems

As a simple test you can always disconnect the throttle cable from the motor. See if the problem persists or not. If it does, it needs to go to the dealer. If not, perhaps a simple cable adjustment is in order.

Is the control box and control cables the same vintage as the motor?

AS a side note, that engine IS FI'ed...

I would get it fixed ASAP as shifting into gear (banging) is very, very hard on the lower unit.

Did the dealer rig the boat and deliver it to you that way or did the idle rise on its own over time?(just curious)

I had issues with shift and throttle.

I suggest looking for kinks in the control cables and disconnecting them at the motor. The lever should be smooth and free. If not, replace them. Cables are a maintenance item. The job takes only half an hour and likely will be less hassle than shlepping to the dealer. With new cables, the dealer can't push you off.

cables should not go bad in one year
and if you jack with stuff on a new motor they can blame you for screwing with it

Ok thanks for the replys. I rigged the motor myself, all new controls and cables. I'll first check the throttle cable for kinks, if that doesn't do it, I'll take it to the dealer. Thanks again

Its not necessarily a matter of kinks.

Its a matter of are the cables allowing the engines shifter and throttle to FULLY return. There should be markings under the cowl for neutral and the throttle linkage FULLY CLOSED.

Popping off the cables and ascertaining they SLIP EASILY (with the shifter in neutral) onto the engine is ESSENTIAL. If they don't re adjust.

If their hanging up while disconnected from the engine, there's an issue elsewhere, NOT in the engine.

**You should be able to start the engine (with MUFFS) W/O the cables attached and it should idle down and shift normally.
