Connecting twin 70's to garmin

Is there a way to connect twin 70's to my garmin unit for engine data. Read that it could be hooked up using the nmea 2000 output from engine. But that was for a single engine and my nmea plug is already being used on each engine to connect the multifunction gauge. Can this be done. Here are some pics of the set up for each engine. Please help.

70 something or other would denote a two stroke. With carburetors. No NMEA 2000 output for those.

yes, you can absolutely connect either or both and display engine data -
in fact the 943xsv can be connected to display a special "Yamaha page"
that emulates the Yamaha 6YC display.

the details of exactly what wiring you use,
to connect them,
"depends" on what else you have

1. so you pictured a 6Y8 tach - I assume you have one for each engine?
are they going to be plugged into a "multi-hub"?

2. Are the Garmins going to be connected to a NMEA 2000 backbone ?
(you have other NMEA 2000 devices to connect to them?)

Yes 1 6y8 for each engine. Garmins are not connected to each other and I don't have a NMEA 2000 backbone. Just want to know how and what is needed to connect the engines to the garmin. Sorry but I don't know much about these connections and want someone to help me get started. Thanks

OK so the Yamaha wiring between the engines and the Tachs is going to be a NMEA 2000 backbone -
so you can simply add each of the Garmins into that.

there's a number of ways to accomplish that -
I suggest the following:

Garmin sells a cable with one end that plugs into the back of the MFD
(the NMEA 2000 port of the 741, either the NMEA 2000 or the J1939 of the 943)
and the other end is a Yamaha plug;

So you get 2 - one for each.

Then you need "room" to plug the other end into the Yamaha cabling.

I suggest you buy a Yamaha "Y-splitter cable"
Part # 6Y8-82521-80-00
two of the 3 ends will connect to the Garmin cables

the 3rd end will connect to a Device port of a Yamaha "multi-port hub"
Yamaha part # 6Y8-81920-01-00

you may already be using one of those, to connect the two tachs

or instead, you may be using an "inline hub"
and an aforementioned Y-splitter cable

in which case the "multi-port hub" takes the place of the "inline hub"

Ok so does the yamaha engine bus to j1939 adapter cable go directly to each garmin or to the nmea 2000 backbone? I don't have a multi port hub so will I need 1 for each engine? Or can the two engines plug into one hub? Is there a diagram i can follow? Like I said i have no knowledge about this so thanks for understanding.

Each Garmin you want to see engine data on, has to be connected to the Yamaha wiring.

Start with this Garmin cable - one for each MFD:




Now if you already have two Yamaha Command Link tachs,
connected without a multi-hub,
then your wiring is like this,
and you need to swap out the inline hub for a multi-hub:

Now the multi-hub will have 3 "Device Port" spots -
one of which you will use for the existing Y-splitter cable to the gauges.

But you can't connect the Garmin cable directly to the multi-hub,
because (stupidly, IMHO) the Yamaha plug is MALE
and the Device Port is MALE

so you need a cable with female Yamaha plugs,
on both ends,
to go between each Garmin cable and the hub.

That can be EITHER
one more Y-splitter cable:





OR
using two "pigtail" cables:

My current set up doesn't have a y splitter. Each engine to gauge is hooked up individually. The connector with the orange wire from the engine and the power wires to the 703 control is hooked up to another cable that goes directly into the multifunction gauge. I think this is the kit that is used for each engine and gauge.

So you have this arrangement - TWICE -
separately for each engine/tach:




While there's nothing wrong with that in your original situation,
its not how it would usually be done,
you "used more wires than you needed".

Now, to have data from both engines on a Garmin,
you'll need to buy TWO multi-hubs
and the 6Y8-82521-80-00 Y-splitter cable.

But you'll have all 4 inline hubs,
and two wire harnesses,
"left over"
that you can sell on eBay.

Yes thats how it was rigged. So I think I got it now. Here's a list of what I need to purchase. I'll be hooking up to just one garmin.
