1997 225 HP Trim/Tilt Unit

I can't get the release screw to turn. I tried to turn both about three weeks ago and they worked, but now they will not turn.I went to harbor freight and got the socket with the proper screw driver head and it still won't work, it is just stripping the head of the screw. I was having problems with the motor going slow up and down, and after adding fluid it is fine. I'm concerned if I put it in the water and something does happen, I won't be able to bypass the pump.

If there's enough meat left on the screw, a hand held impact hammer, like below;

should be able to remove it.

Worse case scenario, you may have to remove the T&T unit from the transom bracket and dremel a slot in the dinked up head for either a screw driver or the imact tool..
