I have a 2008 F150 and i can't get the plastic bowl off the fuel filter in order to change out the filter element? Any suggestions?

The plastic cup turns yellow and expands with todays ethonol. Make sure the Black nut is released obviously and simply work the cup back and forth. It'll come off.
Rodbolt has posted that leaving it off for a couple of days will allow it to shrink back (can't comment on that).
I've replaced mine twice already. Seems to expand about .005"
Make sure the cup FULLY SEATS when re-installing. BTW, if re-using the old one, mine was just about impossible to, but did get me to the marina. The new one, nice and white, slipped right in, absolutly NO issues and you know/felt it fully seated..

A 2008 F150 uses a different filter cup. It does not use the black retaining nut.
Another thing that can be done is to removed the filter assembly from the motor. Drain all of the gasoline and then put the assembly in a freezer for about a day. Unscrew the cup from the filter head.
And by the way, the cup has been improved several times to try and avoid the swelling issue that comes with ethanol. Also, early filter cups has a problem with the water in fuel sensor providing a false signal. You might want to try the latest configuration filter cup.

When you say the fuel sensor in the early filters, are you referrring to thr red ring at almost the bottom? Mine does NOT have any electrical connectors, etc to the unit..Scott

That is another difference between your filter cup and the OP's. Yours uses just a red ring that floats in water to indicate water in the filter cup. His has an electrical sensor in the bottom to indicate the presence of water in the fuel cup. That sensor was known to fail, in which case the buzzer would sound a false alarm.
There are long filter cups and short filter cups. Long filter elements and short filter elements. Filter cups with electrical sensors and filter cups without electrical sensors. Filter cups with mechanical sensor and filter cups without mechanical sensors. Filter cups that are not ethanol resistant and filter cups that may be resistant to ethanol. Yamaha seems to be having a difficult time deciding upon how a filter should be.
