  • Yamaha Oil filters ?Dare to compare !

What makes these things so great? Curious.. I understand they are made in Thailand in a factory that makes oil filters for everything and everybody. Yamaha has great products but do they compare to K&N , Mobil 1 , Fram (Ultra) ??etc.

Yamaha does not use that type of filter anymore.
From what I've read Denso was the only manufacturer with that filter type

5GH-13440-30 (which still is Denso) that superceded 5GH-13440-00 is a "common" paper/card filter and if I'm not wrong now have a Anti-Drain Back Valve (5GH-13440-30) while (5GH-13440-00) doesnt had this device.
Now sounds better to me as after start oil pump doesnīt need to fill oil filter to the motor get the oil (I'm wrong!?)

(I'm talking of oil filters up to F115)

I've been looking for alternative filters, let me say that maybe doesnīt worth save a few bucks if you get a worst product while we spend lot of money on other things to be able for boating, I don't bother pay more for a quality product but I bother pay more for a manufacturer name.

Filters up to F115 are used mainly on bikes with a huge alternative products and no complains from what I've read.
The only complain I've read was from a sierra filter that failed and damage the motor (but that maybe can happen to any other filter manufacturer)

In US the choise is wider, here on my F40 Iīll use a MAHLE OC575 which match with YAMAHA/DENSO 5GH-13440-00

If alternative filter choose a good manufacturer and not a cheap filter

MAHLE produce filter for MB, Porche, BMW (Some BMW bikes use the OC575) I guess this may mean something

Just changed mine today (genuine Yamaha) with oil.

        "Denso" is imprinted on it....

From what I've read F150 and above have even wider alternative filters as those match with lots of auto manucturers, mainly TOYOTA

Let hear if you have any experience with alternative filters and results.

          Here a 5GH-13440-30 cost 14 $/€ while for the MAHLE I payed 4 $/€

By the looks alone the Sierra looks to be a better made product, better design and better organized with its pleats and framing. Filter media I guess is debatable however if it meets specs then Sierra looks to be a better made product.

This was the first time I bought the oil/filter, drain plug gasket as a kit from Yamaha.

My local shop gives me a little bit of a discount too.

For the boat, I stick to OEM filters. I have too much invested to be experimenting with oil filters on a $14,000 engine..

The DENSO company that make Yamaha oil filters is largest automotive part manufacturer in the world..They make everything from dashboards to spark plugs. On the other hand K&N only makes filters ??

I'd stick with the factory recommended filters...but that said, there's probably a lot of filters changed that are still good for many more RPM's, just like spark plugs. I was talking with the owner of an automotive filter media company and he said that no doubt an oil filter is good for 15,000 miles or more!....I service my own boats and cars and I always change the filters "just to be safe", but I know I'm playing right into the hands of the filter manufacturers....If we're honest with ourselves they've got us right in their back pockets$$$...

That is very true... In the olden days LOl the auto makers used to say change the filter every other oil change.. The realization of making more money changed that one to every oil change.. Its all BS.. Look at the dip stick . My oil is nearly a year old and still looks urine yellow.. and clear ! OOPS honey colored I mean

Yep, and my '64 VW rail buggy didn't even have an oil filter until we added an aftermarket unit years ago. And you know, the modern 4 stroke, fuel injected, lean/clean burning outboards ain't gonna dirty up the oil like the old carb/choked motors. All that said, I'm guilty of changing all those like new filters...

Scott agree with you and I have the same concern.

But for sure you have much more invested on your cars (I do) and maybe you donīt use original filters on your cars...

I donīt... I'm using a good quality oil filter on my cars but cheaper than the original and maybe even better than original dunno but it work and free of problems.

On outboards shouldnīt be the same way!? I guess so... if choosed a good quality oil filter (I'm not talking about any cheap filter)

We know auto industrie is much more explored than outboards industrie and we donīt know much about this things on outboards and we can be concerned with the unknown

5GH-13440-00 match (lets say) with WIX 1358 if the those filters destroy motors company will not sell filters (may happen, sure as may happen with a original filter) and can destroy a company

A low cost air company is less secure than other fly companies? If meets all procedures as all others I donīt think so... If a disaster happen on a good fly company its bad luck and people still fly with them, if that happen on low cost company is bad maintenance and people wonīt fly with them and can be the beagining of the end of a company (IMO maybe wrong)

What we need is proof that other filters work, I know ( I can speak for my self) but if a good company producer of filters say it match why it doesnīt?

After all I have the same concerns and I will use an aftermarket filter just on the F40 for now..

My biggest concern with any super-cheap/Chinese filters would not be their ability to filter but their filter media disintegrating/coming apart and plugging an oil passage....

                            Robert thats my concern to...

Heard a few "stories" of that chinese/cheap filters used on cars.

My local yamaha dealer have a "storie" as well that I'll post later as I have to go out now

                              Your right there.

In my 2001 Toyota Four Runner, I use a Fram filter, thier top of the line. With that said, I don't drive my SUV much, 16,000 miles on the odometer right now, (yes 16,000 miles-maybe 1,000 miles a year) as I ride my motorcycle mostly

On another motorcycle forum I frequent, (and elsewhere on the net) are numerous studies on different filters, how well they work, how sturdy they are etc.

                              Now, on the bike, I used to use K&N oil filters but changed over to K&P;
                              Technical Information | K and P Engineering .

I really like the filter, its SS, re-usable, cleanable and easily comes apart to check for any metal in the oil. It also works as an oil cooler. The oil flow far exceeds any standard filter.. BTW, as expensive as its is, its already paid for itself..

Very expensive (and available for my F150) but for my bike with a 14,000 red line, I run top of the line Full Synthetic oil and the BEST oil filter I could find. The truck doesn't see much high RPM's, the OB, a little higher in the RPM range..
