actually it should be the prop shaft or drive shaft
in other works if the motor is running the drive shaft is turning.
it the motor is not running then turn the prop shaft to help line up the dogs.
if the dogs are in line then it will go into gear with no problem, but if they are not lined up and shafts are not turning .it will not go into gear, and if you try hard enough you will bend/twist things like shafts and pins.
I had to replace the shift shaft and the pin in my brothers C60 because of this
the Yamaha manual is for techs, and they should already know that.
maybe after market manuals would say something about it, but I am not sure if they do
