  • Can you recognize these cables?

Hi everyone. Im new to this forum and also a complete newby when it comes to outboard engines. I am looking at a boat to purchase and noticed one of these cables in bad shape. rusted through one spot to the point it could snap at any time. The current owner doesnt know or doesnt want to tell me what it does.... can anyone recognize and tell me how hard it is to replace. I am very mechanically inclined.

    engine : S150txru

    thanks all for the help!!

Hard for me to tell but it appears they will either be the motor steering cable or the throttle and shift control cables.

Does the rusty cable go into the motor cover or does it go to the very front of the motor, outside of the cover?

      Throttle/shift cables or steering cable.

Two skinny ones are throttle/shift as bosco sez and cost about $100 from amazon plus about an hour to relace for a first timer. They're maintenace items. A thicker cable is steering. Neither are a deal breaker, but may reflect on overall condition and care of the boat.

An often occurring issue with little used boats not prepped for storage is old fuel mucking up the works. This can be resoved through a complete top to bottom fuel system repair. Many first endure a search for a single issue.

Don't buy without running the outboard and figure on a $1, 000 repair if it doesn't idle smooth. A trip on the water is a real good idea.

On the flip side, I bought a super clean rig without running and paid that price, later replaced cables and was rewarded with a very little used boat for a good price.

Why would you send someone to Amazon to buy outboard parts when the Company that provide this Helpful Fourm sells them and can make sure your buying the correct one ???

Sorry, my bad. I stay here for Yamaha parts, but never considered cables fall under that.
