  • Yamaha 150 blows main fuse when shifting from reverse to neutral

Hey guys just bought a pontoon. First day on the water backed it off the trailer tied to dock then when I went to start it nothing. After a while of troubleshooting figured out the main fuse was blown. Changed it a few times to see if we could narrow down what it is. When the fuse blows the boat will run but if you shut it off it won’t restart. Figured out that with the engine on or off when you move the shifter to reverse then back to neutral is when it blows it. Can’t see any chaffed wires... stumped. Any advice?

I'd be looking inside the console shifter.

Posting a year and model # (as well as the type shifter box) would also be helpful should you not find any issues inside the shifter.

I just figured it out. Originally we disconnected the trim switch in the handle thinking it was that and didn’t work. I disconnected the trim switch on the motor and now the fuse doesn’t blow. The switch works when connected but blows the fuse when using the handle? Guess I need a switch. Thank you

A bad T&T switch will rarely blow a fuse. It just won't work... I suspect you'll have a spare part once installed.

When you activate the switch and it blows the fuse immediately, you likely have a "dead short" in that circuit.

-IE a hot wire is going straight to ground..
