    motor starts and idles fine, runs rough when put into gear the stall when power is applied, any ideas

    motor needs good compression, spark, timing, and proper fuel to air ratio to run properly.
    Test what you can, but most problems are fuel related and hard to test for.

    So cleaning the carbs would be my thought without any other info

      Clean the carbs, install a fuel/water separator type cartridge filter, use a fuel stabilizer like Stabil all the time....this will minimize your dirty carb jet problems....much cheaper than problems/repairs....

        Part #21 is the main jet(s) which as posted above, is likely clogged up;

        If its idleing, that idle jet is most likely clear but pull both, physically LOOK thru all jets, don't just blow carb cleaner in the housing.

        When you drain the carbs, (drain plug on the lower float bowls), try and catch what comes out checking for crap, water, etc.

        Old, untreated fuel is NOT your friend. In addition to a fuel stabilizer, run Yamaha's "RingFree". Its a fuel system/top end cleaner that works extremly well. If used regularly, with a stabilizer, you won't have any more carb issues..
