Water from Exhaust Pressure Relief Ports

I posted this on THT, but figured I would post it here as well. We have been restoring a 23 foot grady white for the last year or so. We put a 1996 Yamaha 225 SWS motor on it about 2 months ago. Today we were finally able to put her in the water and run it on the trailer.
The first thing I noticed was that at idle, water would spit out of the exuast relief ports that are on the mid section of the motor. If we put in gear and bumped up the rpms, the water stopped coming out of the exhaust ports.

From what I read, this is normal. This is new to me as my 2002 115 Yamaha that is on a CC doesnt do this. The engine on the grady does sit alot lower than the one on my cc.

A couple questions

1. Is this indeed normal behavior for a 1996 yamaha 225?
2. Why does it spit out when at idle but not at higher RPM?

Any idea why it spews out at idle, but stops when the rpms pick up? I am trying to understand what its doing mechanically for that to happen.

I don't know that one....maybe Rodbolt can tell us?....

At high RPM most of the exhaust is going out through the propeller hub. The vent is there so there is little exhaust noise at idle (no bubbling noise)

and now we need a model number.
in the mid 90's the 225 was made in a 2.6L and a 3.1L.
two different cooling systems.

The model number is an S225TURU

so what cooling system does my engine have and is this behavior normal for it?

the s225turu is indeed a 3.1L motor.
you should see a water mist from the relief ports.
even more when your up and running.
in 1996 the L 225 was a 2.6L while the x&U models were 3.1L.
lead to a bit of confusion.
