Trim and Tilt on 2008 Yamaha 300 HPDI

OK so looking at the diagram again the diodes are across the coils.
so how are the diodes failure stop the T&T from working?
open should not affect it, but let reverse voltage run thru the coils.
shorted, it should drop the voltage and not pick up the relay
