2001 200hp HPDI gear noise

When I put the engine in reverse you can hear a brief grind and knock going into reverse. Going into forward no issues. Changed the LU oil every year. A very small amount of metal this past fall, only time it's shown up. Prop has always spun on this engine and I'm wondering if that has something to do with the grind and knocking?

clutch dogs rounded off would be my guess
if the shifting RPM is too high it can cause it
might be the shift interrupt switch too, but I think that is just to help get it out of gear

I do not believe prop spinning in neutral has much to do with it, unless shift linkage is not set up properly
