Yes the o ring is around the housing that slips into the crank case.
I agree with using proper sealant, just have to find the correct one.

Seems if I do not buy part #s 12, 13, 14, and 20 on that part break down( as I do not need them) it will save me money to buy gaskets and seals separately
1999 C40TLRX Yamaha Outboard REPAIR KIT 1 Diagram and Parts

Found the grease I think can someone confirm this is the waterproof grease they call far http://www.boats.net/parts/detail/ya...TPR-GR-00.html

Here is the Gasket Maker if anyone gets to looking for it

They said they did not carry the Loctite 572 but I should be able to find it at any hardware store

OK guys look at this parts break down
1999 C40TLRX Yamaha Outboard LOWER CASING DRIVE 1 Diagram and Parts

      and tell me if # 30 includes 1 of 31, 2 of 32,& 1 of 33

And if so why is it cheaper than #31 by itself?

And why is 30 called water pump housing assembly?
and 31 a water pump housing?

not sure I need those parts but #34 looks to be needing replaced or just cleaned up and slap some grease on it
Also where 34 rides on drive shaft I have a groove, I think it should be there but am not positive about that.
Can anyone give me any verification on the groove in drive shaft?

Rodbolt can you give anything on the groove

That grease you have listed is waterproof (just checked the part # on my container, the same #) and is also used on the F150 driveshaft bushing (in the mid-section), really, really good stuff (and doesn't sling off). I have a small tub of it (recomended by the dealership and manual for that application).

Obviously, if not buying the kit which includes the intake gaskets, etc is cheaper, that of course is fine..

"and tell me if # 30 includes 1 of 31, 2 of 32,& 1 of 33" It does appear all those parts are included.

I know the seals, parts 32, (two seals) are a wear item and should be replaced every couple of years. It was strongly recommended by my dealership to have them replaced after 5 years or so (no oil intrusion into the LU) however one of the SS springs on the top seal had indeed failed.

Re part #34, IDK. I don't think mine had that. I would replace both #32's and #34 for maintainance purposes (those are the main driveshaft seals for the LU).

Re the groove, IDK about your engine, Rod would know but does it appear to be machined into it from the factory? I would think it'd be pretty hard for the seal to wear into that shaft.

With that plate(directly under the water pump), the flat gasket #27, should be replaced as well. If you get the WP kit, I belive that gasket comes with it. My WP kit came with new mounting bolts(4), inner cup, impellor, alignment pins(2), seals, keyway, that flat gasket as well as that plate ..

Looking again at your LU parts diagram, I don't see that "kit" (not at least on that fisch) as mine was.. It may not be just listed...

Yes the kits are on a different one.
I have 2 water pump kits here already , was looking for other stuff to get that I might need to replace.

I have already placed the order and got a #34 along with the seal dampener and guide as they needed replacing.
I will eventually reseal the lower unit if everything goes well with this part of the project.
Just need to figure out how to pull those plastic seal housings for shift shaft and the drive shaft

Still wonder why #30 assembly is cheaper than just the housing

its cause your reading in more than you understand.
most the stuff is a japinglish translation.
if you don't speeky you pay more.
for the US market japan sells kits, kinda.
for most the rest of this planet you buy individual partds.
mericans are mostly fat dumb and lazy.

what mericans really really want is a self assybling kit for 10 bucks.

            Volvo is worse
            Tohastu is nuts.

however over the years I have learned to deal with it.

most jap kits, and Volvo, buy ONLY what you need and its half the price.

Rod I do not understand what you are saying.
Why does #30 assembly list for less than the individual parts #31 32, and 33 together if they are all part of the assembly

                  ok.
                  Ill try again.
                  leave the kits alone.
                  order what you need.
I think this is English not Swahili or jinglish.
                  yes Yamaha sells kits,kinda.

yes they are exspensive and yes they will come with stuff you wont need.

yes sometimes looking up parts on boats.net is frustrating.
its not much better with part smart or parts manager express.

Some times it is cheaper to buy kits,
Like the water pump kit for $29.15
                    Individual parts:
                    impeller $24.58
                    Cup (insert,cartridge) $11.90
                    wear plate (outer plate, cartridge)$11.34
not to mention the gasket, oring, etc, etc

For $5 bucks more than just the impeller you get a lot of parts that are good to replace every time you change water pump

I know it all depends on what kit or assembly you are buying.

That is why I was asking about the #30 assembly in this part break down
1999 C40TLRX Yamaha Outboard LOWER CASING DRIVE 1 Diagram and Parts

To me that would be a oil seal assembly (not a water pump housing assembly as they list it) for $19.51 that contains the housing($29.15), 2 seals($5.11 each), and o ring ($3.17) according to what I see in the break down. Assembly is cheaper than just the housing by itself.
I just thought you would have some input on if that was a correct assumption on my part that if needing to replace those seals and damaged the housing trying to get it out ,it would be best to order the assembly.

surely someone has ordered that #30 in the past and could give a correction if the breakdown and labeling was wrong

I will post a picture of what I am talking about.
Does this shaft normally have this groove or is it a bad wear problem?

some housings come with seals, some don't.
I cant remember if that one does or not.

                          Yamaha kits can get stupid.
some carb kits, water pump kits, powerhead kits and lower unit seal kits are stupid.
some don't contain parts you NEED others contain a bunch you will never use.

I agree on the kits as they are a hit or miss type of thing, just have to look to see if you can find someone to verify what parts come in them.

, but was wondering if you could give input on the drive shaft groove I was showing
