I'm replacing my tach and the new one doesn't have one of the pig tails the original had. The tach wires plugged in with no problems and the tach works fine. However, my trim gauge doesn't work and the oil light on the tach stays on. The old tach had pink/red, yellow/red and a brown/blue pig tails, but the new one only has the pink/red and yellow/red. I spliced in the old brown/blue lead in the same location as the original, so everything is as originally wired but something is apparently wrong. It's hard to trace since the harness plug has different colored wires than the ones from the tach for warning lights. It doesn't seem to make sense that the brown/blue wire, which appears to be the temp warning light circuit, would feed the trim gauge. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have an analog tachometer and analog trim gauge? Sounds like it since you refer to the trim gauge as being separate.
Are you talking about single electrical leads with bullet connectors on the end or are you talking about wires terminated with a multi-pin connector?
What are the part numbers of the new gauges?
Why are you splicing wires? With Yamaha stuff it should all be plug and play.
The pink wire in a Yamaha trim/oil harness is for the trim signal.
Photos of what you have would be nice.

Thanks boscoe99. The tach is analog, as is the separate trim gauge. I'm only replacing the tach; part # 6Y7-83540-90-00.
The pig tails I'm referring to are the separate bullet connectors. The old tach had three, which were all used. The new tach had only two. There was a brown/blue pig tail (bullet connector) missing. This lead was factory spliced into the same brown/blue feeding the temp light, so I removed it from the old tach and spliced it into the new one, plugged it in and had the symptoms I described.
When I look at the engine harness side of the plug, there is a blank space opposite the brown/blue wire from the tach plug, however, the brown/blue from the engine harness side feeds a green/yellow on the tach side, which then appears to backfeed the brown/blue wire on the tach side.

I am presuming that your three light tachometer had lights for the oil system status and no light for over temperature.
The -90 tachometer has just two lights - one light for oil (pressure in a four stroke/main tank quantity in a two stroke) and one light for over temperature.
With the -90 tachometer you are giving up some information regarding oil system status (no notice of low oil in the boat mounted tank) but you now have an over temperature light.
In the trim/oil harness from the motor the pink wire is for the trim gauge, the gray wire (changes to brown/black) is for the over temperature light and the green/red wire (changes to red) is for the low oil warning in the main oil tank.
