2005 Yamaha F225txr fuel pump issue?

So I'm having an issue with the motor running. I prime the bulb, motor starts instantly like normal. In the beginning I can rev the engine up or let it idle for a while 10 minutes maybe more. Once it has used the fuel in the VST tank, it will die. When watching the internal fuel filter I don't see that surge of fuel that refills the bowl like I use too. I noticed that the primer bulb while just sitting, not running got soft. Here is what I have done so far:

1. Checked all the fuel lines and replaced several hose clamps- nothing obvious .
2. Replaced the primer bulb- still gets soft while sitting
3. Checked for water in the 10micron fuel/separator-none
4. fixed red water tattle tail in the on board fuel/water separator. It was kinda pinned under the plastic base.

So after checking the normal things thinking I'm sucking air since the primer bulb was losing stiffness I figured I would just bypass the external fuel/water separator. I grabbed a 1 gallon can and some gas. I put a section of hose from the primer bulb straight into the gas can, primed it, cranked it and the same results. Runs til it runs out of fuel in the VST.

So, where do I go from here? The fuel pump sounds like it is working. Put the key in the on position, you hear it come on and prime or attempt to prime. It it really on? Or is the "F" filter clogged? When I manually prime it am I forcing fuel into the VST tank with more pressure that the pump is generating and that is how the VST is getting fuel.

The fuel pump sounds like it is working. Put the key in the on position, you hear it come on and prime or attempt to prime.

You've got two electric fuel pumps,
what you hear at key on is the pump inside the VST,
pressurizing the fuel rail.

The other pump - low pressure aka lift pump -
which keeps the VST filled -
isn't energized until the engine has started.

And then at idle (below 1200 rpm)
the lift pump runs 10 seconds on, 20 seconds off

The primer bulb does the same thing that the lift pump is supposed to do.

You might start by checking if the lift pump can run -
take off the intake runners so you can get at it -
then with key on,
use a test lead and backprobe to ground the pump

Ok, so I started looking at the LP fuel pump more. Since you suggested the noise I was hearing was the HP side inside the VST tank. I went to the fuse first and it was blown for the LP pump. Changed the 5 amp fuse and it blew again. Since there are no serviceable parts on that pump I assume the pump is seized up and will need to be changed.

The stock pump in normal condition only draws 2.5 amps -
so yes, I would agree, sounds like the pump needs to be replaced.

Yamaha no longer sells the exact replacement,
rather a kit (apparently it comes with a different mount).

The price of the original pump was egregious,
the price of its replacement goes further, to absurd.

I have heard of folks searching for that Yamaha part number on,
let us say, a famous auction website,
and finding a perfectly suitable 'generic' fuel pump
for 'considerably less'.

I went Generic for just a tad under $100. There was some crazy stuff on there like a used one for $600 and even more, just crazy!

Fairdeal - how many hours on your F225 now? I am betting/hoping Covid cases are few and far between in BPK? Fishing normally?

Just shy of 2300 hours now.
Didn't use it much last year,
due to various geriatric (non-lethal) health issues
(me, not the Yamaha).

The Keys have 41 known cases as of today, 22 of them Key West,
the closest in Marathon - 17 miles away.
although only ~350 people have been tested.

But yeah, my lifestyle here in BPK is such
that 'social distancing' is ordinary routine anyway...

Plus the tourons have been sent home,
US1 is blockaded at the north end to keep out daytrippers.
Its fairly quiet.

Its been windy for months -
but I've gotten offshore a few days recently -
got mahi and tuna.
