IMHO these 3 cyl two stroke outboards were built for work. All linkage adjustments are referenced from markings on the block. Most repairs can be accomplished with simple hand tools. I suggest ordering a service manual from YAMAHA MANUAL STORE. It clearly describes all adjustments. With one use it pays for itself.
If you're near Wanchese, NC, you could take an easy and successful path and leave it with Joe's Marine service. Ask for Tom.
Good luck, hope this helps and keep us posted.

Timing too far advanced can cause high idle RPM

Is this on a hose, or in the water (or bucket)? I have much more experience with stern drives than outboards, but from my experience with OB's, they always seem to run a little high out of the water due to less backpressure (from lack of water against the exhaust).2000 Yamaha OX66 250HP SX250TXRY 61AX103847T
