why bother with all the crap?
    do the test I explained.
if the relay goes click for up and down that tells me the relay control circuits are functioning.
if the polarity shifts from about battery voltage + and - it tells me relay power and ground are ok.
leaves just about the motor or motor wires.
    yep Virginia, its this simple.

He might not have ever seen a relay before or be aware of its inner workings. Let alone a combination type relay that reverses current flow.

What is crystal clear and simple to you might not be the same to someone that is not a mekanic.

Try imagining how the landing gear of a C5 airplane rotates itself as it is being retracted up into the gear well. It is something that you have to see in person about a dozen times before it even begins to come clear.

This is just part of the action. We don't even get to see the support struts that are being unlocked and locked over center to hold the gear in place when it is down.

Just for laughs , my wife's volvo c 70 hard top convertible looks more complicated than that when it retracts, just kidding cool video

I thought I was fairly clear.
yes there is a whole page of relay/motor tests that can get confusing.

the simple way is with a DVM and your ears.
if the relay goes click for up and down we just tested the control circuits and they work cause our ears just confirmind it.

          on to the output test.

with one lead on the motor green terminal and the other on the motor blue terminal hit it up,or down, and you should see either + or - battery voltage.
now,WITHOUT MOVING the meter leads, hit the button the other direction.
meter should show the same voltage with opposite polarity of the first test.

if it does we just confirmed the relay power feed and grounds are functional.

now we are 4 min into testing and have isolated what the issue is.

some engines will take 20 min to access the relay but testing is quick once your there.
