Rusty PTT housing on 30hp four stroke

Hi. As you can see in the picture I have quite a lot of rust forming on one part of my PTT unit.
I would like to clean it up and apply some hammerite paint. it is also rusting around the back.
Question is can the part marked with an arrow be removed, or will it flood out with oil or other fluid?

That is more than just a housing. That is a $400 plus "stator" which is a component of the trim and tilt motor. It is actually cheaper to buy a completely new motor than it is to buy just the stator by the way.

You definitely want to clean that up and to do what you can to slow down the onset of rust.

Simplest fix would be to remove the entire trim and tilt assembly so that you have better access to the stator. Either clean, prime and paint the stator in place or remove it from the housing.

It might be less work and less risk to remove the stator together with the frame end attached. Item 8 in this illustration.

Thanks for the reply. The diagram looks really complicated and i'm still not sure how to approach this. Will have to have a long look at the motor tomorrow - fortunately it's on my front drive so I can sit & try to work it out.

Which is why I suggested removing the entire assembly from the motor (very easy) and clean, prep, prime and paint the stator housing while it is installed on the trim and tilt assembly.

But, it is not rocket science to remote the electric motor as an assembly either. It looks more difficult that it is.

Thanks again. I've just had a look regarding removing the entire thing from the motor. Looks ok, so i'll give that a go.

I've seem a lot worse cases of corrosion on these....yours seems fairly minor....if it was mine I'd clean the area thoroughly with a toothbrush and some abrasive cleanser, dry with a heat gun/blower/hair dryer, prime and paint....then after the paint has dried spray the entire area, motor, pump, rams, etc. with white lithium grease...it'll set up there and keep the water off your unit....I've used this method for many years with great results....good luck!
