As you know, a technical bulletin has been issued for the replacement of ECU's in certain I4 models. To better combat detonation it would appear. I can only surmise that Yamaha has seen detonation in the newer models and is trying to do what they can to prevent it. If this is the case, why do you think there is no inspection of the motor when it goes into the shop for the ECU replacement? A compression check is called for when the big block HPDI oil pump mod is done so why not one when the ECU is replaced in the I4 models? If there is some damage evident in a motor due to detonation wouldn't Yamaha want to know about it?
Have you done this modification yet? Do you suspect that you will be seeing models that will need the new ECU? Would be interesting to me to know what the ECU modification is about, if that can be determined. Do you think they are richening up the fuel mixture at certain power levels, backing off the advance timing somewhat or ??? More fuel is going to affect the economy of the motor somewhat. Backing off advance timing may result in it producing less power.
Have you thought about running a motor with the old ECU and then with the new ECU, with the motor being monitored by YDIS, to try and see what can be seen? Do you ever do this sort of stuff for curiosities sake?
the Z250 and some of the Z300 recalls were useless. they would blow up any way.
dunno about the latest bulliten but we do have 2 2.8L engines in stock that have to be modified.
