  • Battery charging capabilities?

I have a 15 MSH (15HP 2-stroke) and I read somewhere that there is a "kit" I can add to it that would allow me to charge a lead-acid battery while running.

Does anybody know if this is for real, and where I might find such a "kit"?

    Thanks.

First, confirm that you model has a lighting coil. Which I think is the case. You should find two green wires coming from under the flywheel that are not connected to anything.

The kit you will need is 676-81970-01-00.

That is correct...there are two green wires coming out from under the flywhel that are NOT connected to anything.

From the catalogue...they refer to this as a "rectifier kit" while "charge" kits are listed below. Will this rectifier kit provide a DC output to charge the battery for my *****ing motor, for instance?

The lighting coil will create AC voltage. The "rectifier" will convert that voltage to DC which can be fed to a battery.

Unregulated voltage by the way but the motor produces so little current that it won't matter.

Your motor has a lighting coil and the necessary flywheel to create voltage and current. The "charge" kit if you will note includes both a lighting coil and a flywheel which your model does not need.

charging output is something like 5 amps at WOT and about 1 amp at idle.
            almost not worth mucking with.

Maximum output for a 15MSH is indicated as 6 amps. At best.

But, small amps over time add up. It will charge a battery as long as you don't have anything connected to the battery that exceeds whatever current the motor can supply at a particular RPM.

Given that the motor is a manual start, for what purpose do you need to have it connected to a battery?

And keep all connections clean and tight. You can't afford any more voltage drop and current loss than would be normal since you are starting with so little.

                  Baja.
yep I have done a few rectifier installations on them tiny mites.
why I dunno other than that's what the customer wanted.

for just lights you can simply hook up the wires.
you will see the lights dim and brighten with engine speed.
                  then its called A/C lighting.

I did talk one guy out of it. he wanted to charge his *****ing motor battery.
I explained to him that at WOT it only put out about 5 amps.
so you run to the fishing spot charging 5 amps for 30 min-1 hour. then you spend the next few hours drawing 25-30 amps out of that group 27 deep cycle.
                  do the math.

Why do you say this? Yamaha USA is selling them in the US.

You might want to get out and read up some more on what Yamaha is offering to US folks.
