  • 2005 Yamaha 50 Outboard Loss of Power

I have a 2005 Yamaha 50 on the back of a J16 Carolina Skiff. I was cruising about 25 mph the other day and all the sudden lost a ton of power but was still running and able to limp home. i was unable to get up on plane after that. I put a new fuel pump in and now I can get on plane barely but top speed is probably not even 15 mph. Any suggestions what to look at next?

check compression, spark to all plugs, and timing.
need to make sure it is in spec and advancing as it should when you throttle up.

do you have any gauges that can tell you is an alarm comes in for low oil and over heat?
does the buzzer sound as it should when an alarm comes in?

you might have had an alarm situation and your buzzer did not work.

if so and you kept running it
there is a very good possibility you have damaged you motor

or you just have a plugged main jet in a carb

Check for water in your fuel.

        Plus 1 ^^^.

Drain and catch fuel from the carb float bowls or VST and check for water.

That's besides the under cowl fuel filter..
