I have a 1988 90 hp two cycle that was recently diagnosed with a scored number one cylinder. It appears that cylinder went lean per the mechanic. I bought the entire rig for a good price but not sure what direction to go in. If I go with a Yamaha rebuilt powerhead it's aprox. 6 k with labor. Buying new is aprox. 10 k neither looks good to me. I have found someone local that says he can rebuild for aprox. 2500.00 with a one year guarantee. Another option is purchase another used outboard. What would you do ? This is going on a 17 ' center console.

Well, mine is a 1999 Yamaha C90 very similar to yours and I'd consider finding a good running used motor same as the one I have and keep the old one for parts....It would sure be nice to have a parts motor sitting over in the back of the shed for all future uses....think how long you could run that motor!....Regarding boring that bad cylinder and replacing that piston, it could get pretty expensive and considering all those nuts/bolts/fasteners that may break during disassembly, considering the age of the motor....just a thought...
