  • Low pressure fuel pump

Hey guys. I think one or both of my low pressure pumps might be going on my 200 hpdi. My question is what's the best way to determine this and how hard would it be to replace them? I'm thinking it might be them cause when I went to drain the vst tank very little fuel came out and i can't get the engine to build rpms.

Pump the heck out of the primer ball.

If the motor will run while the primer ball is continuously pumped then that is a pretty good indication that the lift pumps are failing/have failed.

Pumping the primer ball is doing the job that the lift pumps should be doing.

This assumes there are no leaks in the fuel system and no restrictions in the fuel system to prevent fuel flow.

Not a difficult job to change the lift pumps.

Too bad we don't know the model of the motor.

Z200tlrz 2001 200 hpdi. The engine starts and idles fine. I started losing rpms and then the engine stalled. Engine starts fine but as soon as I put it in gear no rpms and then stalls. Could this be a lift pump problem? Plugs new and vst filter new.

Monitoring the fuel pressures will tell you a lot about what is going on

I would think there would be plenty of fuel in the VST to idle and get you up and running for a little while.

Did you try draining your vst tank after a stall and see how much fuel is in there?

If there is no fuel, be careful, you can burn that pump up quickly.

You could also be having a fuel issue on the boat, making it tough for the lp pumps to draw fuel, ie plugged tank vent (remove gas cap to test that). stuck anti siphon valve on the tank pickup. Best way to test would be to run the engine off a 5 gal jug of fresh fuel. See if the issue is boat or motor..

Went down to boat today and replaced the lp pumps. When I loosened the pumps from the body a small amount of fuel came out so I decided to just change both of them since they are the original pumps. Not to hard to change. Boat started right up and went for a ride. The engine ran great. Another problem solved. Thanks for all the replies.

                  Start a new thread.

Provide the complete model of the motor and a full description of the problem. What is the motor doing and when is it doing it?

Just because the symptoms of one motor are similar to the symptoms of a different motor in no way implies they share the same problem. Many get wrapped around an axle if they think this way. They start throwing parts and labour at a problem when they don't even know what the problem is.

                    It's a 92 Yamaha 130, 130TXRQ
The problem is that the motor boggs down above idle. Pump the bulb till solid, start motor, motor empties the clear inline filter, and only pulls enough fuel into filter to run engine slightly above idle. New fuel line, water separator filter, inline filter, and the filter next to fuel pump. Completely emptied tank , filled w/90 octane non-ethanol and stabil. Fuel hose terminates at tank on a shutoff valve. Don't see a checkvalve unless it's in the valve.
Took her out 6 times, and the motor ran great on one ride. Had to keep pumping bulb, and she suddenly took off. She ran my Osprey 200 at 55, and loving it. Only 262 hours. The boat spent 16 years on a lift
