on some engines the drive shaft bearing is destroyed when removing it.
other engines just use bushings.
in anycase if you record the fwd and rev lash BEFORE disassembly its dirt simple to reset the pinion height when reassembling.
on some cases replacing the shaft or the bearing MAY lower or raise the pinion.
best to put it back where it was.
unless a gear is replaced then you do the complete procedure.
