  • F80 Engine Mounts worn out

Glad I found this Forum and I am new here. I have a '02 F80TLRA 4 Stroke with just over 1700 well maintained hours, and I like to do most of my own repairs and maintenance - if I can. Just found out that the engine bracket (mounts) are worn out, and there is lots of play (front back side), when you rock the engine power head - as an indicator. The steering feels pretty tight though. Both the upper and lower bracket mounts may need replacing, and it looks like the power head and lower unit need to be pulled for repair. These are listed as Bracket 1, and Bracket 2 - and there are lots of parts in the diagrams I think. My thoughts are the worn parts must have rubber bushings to keep everything tight, and they have worn out. Not sure what I need, just hope I don't need them all!! I don't think I want to try this major fix. Anyone with an idea what parts I will need, or that has had to make these same repairs, feel free to comment.

Thanks Scott. So it looks like both of upper and lower side damper mounts. Hope that is all that is needed. So do the power head and lower unit need to be removed to install?

Look close at all the parts even close, I saw some other rubber dampners, etc...

        Re the install,

Just looking at the parts fisch, it appears to be a fairly easy procedure, the power head and LU don't appear they have to come apart. Disconnecting the powerhead/LU from the steering bracket assembly appears to be it.

An investment in a shop manual would likely be worth it.

It apprears supporting the engine (perhaps hanging from a davit (or garage rafter) with a "come along", would allow the separation, pull the old parts, slip in to the new ones.. Depending on how tight your wiring is, you may get by without disconnecting any major harnesses(I would disconnect the battery just for safety).

If you have a garage, the boats on a trailer, I ran a 4x 4" beam beefed up with 2x4's across several roof rafters in the garage. Punched a hole thru the sheetrock and 4x4, and installed a long thru bolt with a closed end on it. Sjip your come along on it and the engine and crank her up!

I've pulled SB Chevy engines (350) with transmissions easily in the garage using this set up..

Looking at the parts diagram again, I see what you mean. I have a pretty good tech that made the repair recommendation. He said depending on the needed parts, an estimate of $800 - $1200 off the top of his head. The parts total looks like may not be so bad, maybe $400 max. It looks like I may be smart to let a Professional Yamaha Tech take it in. It's been a great engine with 1700 hours over the past 12 years - If I could get 3000 out of her like I'm hoping, it would be worth it.

I looked at the damper mounts again, and it seems that the Power Head and Lower Unit could stay in place (together). Looks like you could just use the other mount (top or bottom) to pivot the motor while accessing the opposite damper you are replacing. Do one at a time. Wonder what RODBOLT would say the labor would be?

I'd be more curious as to how difficult it is. From your PM and the parts fisch, it doesn't look like a hard project at all, especially with the top mount being fairly accessable. 99Yam40 or Rodbolt (or another member) may know..

Like any repair on an outboard. Corrosion can be your biggest headache.

I have never worked on a F80, but am fairly sure you will have to take all sorts of things apart to get to the mounts including the power head coming off.
Service manual will give you the steps needed to do the job

I purchased a 2004 F60 where the upper mount bolts failed. It did require removal of the powerhead. Not a horrible job. Take your time and don't force anything. I replaced the bolts, some gaskets and seals - and bolted it back together.

to do the upper and lower mounts will require lower unit and powerhead removal.
then remove the midsection from the steering bracket.
                      replace mounts and reassemble.
                      piece o cake.
                      done in about 6 hours.

Thanks everyone - put it in the shop. Some things are best left for me not to do.

Smart move....what's a 6 hour "piece o pie" to Rodbolt could be a real nightmare to the average backyardigan.....Like Dirty Harry says, "A guy's gotta know his limitations".....good luck!....

barring excessive corrosion its a simple matter of unbolting and bolting back up.
however its nice to have access to the correct lifting slings/devices and parts.
