Fuel sensor stops motor

Wasn't sure how else to make the title. Of course the fuel sensor will stop the motor if there is water in the separator filter but that's the problem. There is no water in the bowl.
This is a 40 HP 4 stroke Model F40LA. There was an issue with water but no more. Disconnecting the sensor allows motor to run fine. Reconnecting it has motor stopping like key was turned of after a few minutes.
No alarm or gauges on this install that are known of. No alarm sounds from key.
Any suggestions?

test the so called sensor.
it actually a switch.
with no water it should read open circuit.
alarm should only sound when the engine is in N,no alarms if its in gear when the switch closes.
stupid? absolutely.
I wasn't called by the engineers that desined it.
its possible that the ECU is being loaded down by that switch and causing another sensor to give erroneous feedback or the ECU is over currenting.

even with the switch closed and the alarm sounding it should NOT affect engine operation.
once in gear the alarm will quit even if its full of water.
