Is this normal?

Pretty sure I slipped a prop this weekend. was running at about 5200 RPM on a 2002 200HPDI, felt a sudden deceleration accompanied with increase in RPM. the boat would only move at idle speed despite the RPMs the gear would slip above 2900 RPM. Pulled prop and found a small amount of water on the prop shaft. the area behind the thrust washer was dry and packed with grease. The void area behind the prop outside of the thrust washer was filled with water. Is that normal? trying to figure if I have something more serious than just a slipped hub.

Not understanding full of water. All of that in the pic is under water when running. The hub that probably slipped is part of the prop not shown in picture. Made of of hard rubber like substance.

Water will sit in there unless trimmed down (on a trailer or lift).

The carrier (that the prop shaft fits thru), is fairly deep and if you look inside, to the outer case, you can see how deep it is.

You can check for water in the LU, but very likely, it's fine...

It does sound like the prop hub bit the dust...

Where water stops, is at O-rings part # 67, quite a bit deeper in the case. Beyond that, water is in the oil...

That metal washer in the first pic should be able to be removed for a better look.

Tried to remove that "washer" it's a solid piece with bearings. there was a washer there that is not shown in the picture. what you see is the end of the hub closest to the prop nut.

The issue you described experiencing are the exact indicators of a spun hub. No biggie. Remove and replace.

Look at it this way, what's the point of having a rubber hub? It is designed to fail, it's there for a safeguard to save the lower unit if prop hits something. And the thing is rubber deteriorates over time sometimes helped by exhaust heat going through the hub (like running engine out of water).
Good thing is that when you rebush this hub you know it want happen for quite sometime in normal use.
