Re-installing Shift rod

Like i've said in an earlier query, I dropped the LU and didn't seat the shift rod correctly and cannot put the motor into forward or reverse.
Is there a correct way to line it up? Should I maybe put the throttle into gear then replace? Any help would be appreciated.

Shift handle in neutral and lower unit in neutral.

Just finesse the lower unit when reinstalling it so that the female shift shaft portion interfaces with the male shift cam assembly. The shift shaft will wiggle around a bit. It is sometimes easy to miss the connection.

No fun at all when you have reinstalled all of the attach hardware, driven miles to the lake, put the boat into the water, only to find that it won't shift because one shaft did not get mated properly with the other shaft.

I resemble that remark! Lesson Learned.

Stupid question....if it's in correctly, and I put the shift handle into forward or reverse, should I feel any resistance going the opposite direction?

Put some flush muffs on the motor. Turn on the tap. Start the motor. Shift if from neutral to forward, back to neutral, then to reverse, then back to neutral. It either works correctly or it does not.

The reason I suggest doing it on the muffs is that a motor that is running will shift much more easily than if it is not running.
