  • 2011 F150TXR Code 28 (Shift Position Switch)

So I was sitting out on my boat yesterday after I had been using it all weekend, fishing and going to the beach, and when I fired it up to go home it started flashing check engine and the code I was getting was 28 which is the shift position switch. I blasted back to my marina and everything was running fine, no low RPMs that I noticed, no stalling, just kept flashing check engine and giving me back a code 28. Can anyone help me out on how to troubleshoot this problem? Thanks in advance.

possibly it was not quite in neutral when you turned the key.

did it finally go away once restarted a couple of times?

first - the 'trouble code' s nothing to be concerned about
      the engine operates normally regardless

the shift position switch is one of the two microswitches
which are mounted to the shift 'slider" mechanism that the shift cable attaches to
its the one with a blue/green wire at the engine harness connector
(the other switch with a blue/yellow wire is the "shift cut")

it should be "on" - closed - when the shifter is in neutral
and 'off" - open - when in gear

you can check that, with a meter or test light -
may find that the switch has failed open or closed.

Otherwise, I don't know what would prompt the ECM to cry foul.

the only purpose I can recall for the switch,
is to limit rpms in neutral (so as to prevent harmful over-rev)

Start the motor in gear. What code is displayed?
I cant get to my laptop to check.

there are two switchs on the shift slide.
one is shift cut the other indicates in a gear or not.
the shift position actually has a ref voltage and a resistor.
test it as per the service manual.
you can also watch it on YDS.

Thanks for the help. I am not able to get to the marina till Friday but I will take a look and test it out and see if it happens again. If it does I will check the wires. I'll let you know where I stand Friday! Thanks again for the help

I believe that switch kills the ignition for a micro second for shifting BACK into neutral.

Otherwise, it's a pain to put in neutral once in gear (a decent amount of load with the prop in gear).

I'd at least check the alignment marks at the "shifter slide", under the cowl and that everything ((mark, cables, lines up)), (star board side).

either Rodbolt was mistaken, or the Yamaha documents are wrong-
but the SM shows the shift cut has the resistor,
              the shift position does not.

(Its the shift cut that triggers misfiring to facilitate shifting)

I don’t know and don’t have time to research. But I do have the boat in driveway. Maybe I give her a go. Challenge is getting connection on YDS. I use it once a year.

No go. My YDIS days may be over. Tried new and old laptops. Changed port settings. Varied on/off versus opening program. Who knows?

So I am new to Yamaha outboards. What is YDS, I would imagine it's the program to read codes on the motor? How do I get my hands on it?

Why not? Had a headlamp, etc.
