• Lower Unit Lube

I have an '89 Pro-V 150, can someone tell me if I should run the engine with "Quick Silver High Performance Gear Lube"? I have been using "Quick Silver Premium Gear Lube" for the last few years. I noticed on the back of the bottle it says not to mix the two and now has me worried. OR is there a better option/product I can buy off the shelf to pump into the lower unit. This motor is great, I religously keep up maintaince, and don't want to shorten the life by using wrong parts/fluids. Thanks!

I use Mobil One 90w synthetic gearlube, it doesn't mix with water. Of course you can't really go wrong just using the Yamaha gearlube either....

levi,
Mike is right - Mobil 1 synthetic is about as good as you can get - you can't wear it out, but you need to check it at least twice a year for water intrusion into the lower unit.
I think the other major brands are ok, as long as you drain and replace them once a year. But I would not mix different grades/brands. If you want to change what you have been using, let the old stuff drain for a long time, like overnite - and then refill with the new stuff. Sometimes different additives can react with each other and form a "sludge".
Good luck ,
