Do I need the Yamaha remote control?

I recently had to replace my older motor with a spare 2001-2002? 90hp I had. What I need to know is how I can run this motor with my current power control and gauge set. I know I'll need some sort of cable to connect to the pin connector, but does it only run with the Yamaha remote control and all-in-one gauge?
