  • Two versions of carbed F50 CDI ?

I have largely limited my interest in Yamaha outboards to EFI 4-strokes - and ~75 hp and up.
    Two-smoke, or carbed 4-stroke - I don't want care about it.

But this Petterson thread has intrigued me - so I've been poking around.

Boscoe posted in that thread a schematic of a F50 CDI with 13 leads -
two of which - P/W, P/B -go to the familiar trim/oil harness connector.

    But I'm also seeing a schematic - on a carbed F50 - of a CDI with 15 leads -

with the additional two - and the P/W and P/B - going to a 'stand-alone' "Alert Indicator"

    so in that iteration,
the CDI provides both power and ground to the overheat / oil pressure lamps
(separate power for each, to boot)

    the mind reels......

    What F50 model?

The only thing that I can figure out is that there is no rhyme or reason as to what or why Yamaha does what they do. Couple that with data that is clearly incorrect and it makes one wonder how and when a mechanic can repair a motor. Throw parts at it I suppose.

or maybe not all f50 models were the same.
the early versions had a rube Goldberg enrichment and accelerator pump. the later versions had a different setup on the carbs but still used CDI. the EFI version uses TCI.
just because it is rated at 50 HP does not mean they are all identical.
if that were true then the rocker covers from my 72 monte carlo should fit my neighbors 2000 vett, they both had used a Chevrolet motor of 350 CId.

Perusing the F50 models in the parts books, I found some with 62Y CDI's and some with 64J CDI's.

64J seems to be for the T50's yet some how, some way, got on some F50's.

Have too many 64J CDI's on hand and don't know what to do with them? Just put them on F50's. Problem solved.
