Lived here 11 years. Just noticed them three years ago.

When i was growing up on the south shore of Long Island, we had those green flies by the hordes. Not so much inland, but just into the Great South Bay and it was usually **** on.

Man those suckers had big teeth!

Interesting - I also saw my first yesterday - its early, I think -
but the weather here has been more like July than early May.

the only good thing about greenhead flies, and deer flies,
and I assume pstephens' yellow flies,
is that they are so slow, stupid and 'fragile'
that once you notice them,
they are satisfyingly easy to kill

I was out on the bay flats a couple of weeks ago and the little black flies were bad.
I even got up on top of my poling platform and they still were eating my legs up.
seems the more I killed the more showed up.
might be the smell they put out after they are smashed.
I gave up and headed home.

I will be taking long pants along just in case next time if the wind and rains ever stop

Even running down the bay at 30mph they were holding onto the boat, and motor.
even the aluminum frame work of the poling platform.

and I have always thought that skeeters were bad

"Love bugs" are a PIA down here now. They love exhaust fumes, splatter up the front of anything on the interstate (take off paint too if left on).
Heck, gotta keep the fan on when running an engine as they swarm for the fumes (around the garage)!

GA Coast. They are slow. Easy to swat. Man they hurt though. Thankfully gone by mid June.

We have them too. Seems a mystery why they etch car paint. Some university did some testing. Their guts were not acidic. My research lasted about an hour.

no, all happening up country from me

I had 1.1" last Sat and a few small showers that just got the street a little wet so far

put a brisket on this morning at 5:30

Update....little bored here...

Carb cleaner will knock their ass silly.
Just be aware what may be behind the target! Wasps too! Small victories.....
