  • throttle roller adj (Rodbolt)

I have a 225TLRS and my book says to adj the roller "to touch" the cam at idle but I noticed that on a previous post about adj on a later model 130HP, you said "not to touch". Is this just a difference in motors or am I not understanding or is my book wrong
    Thanks

Not an expert and not sure if you motor is the same but on my smaller motor with totally mechanical advance. With the throttle pulled to off, the roller is not really at the point of touching or if it is, is on the area of the cam that does not open the carb. As you throttle up, the roller as soon as the carb starts to open the butterfly is the what is called the pickup timing. It's not just the roller touching. I actually put a dial indicator on the ling to the carb so I see the dial needle move. I have the flywheel at the pick up timing mark and also the magneto control lever mark aligned with the fire mark on the OD of the flywheel. This is were I loosen the roller and make it touch the cam. Once locked, then of course I double check it by slowly advancing the throttle till I see the carb actually start to open. At that point, the magneto control lever should align on the OD of the flywheel. In my case, I have a full retard of idle timing of 5 ATDC (-5 BTDC) I have a pick up of 0 BTDC degrees and a full advance setting of 25 BTDC . Note all are +/1 degree and also a progression starting at -5, 0 and 25 This is what makes an outboard tricky especially the minus one.

I've found its about different for every different engine... I'd follow the manual to the letter, unless you have issues, you should be good.

On my F150, one spot calls for .020" space, another part of the linkage control calls for it to touch.

I personally dont like any of them to touch at idle, the vibration causes flat spots on the roller, get it as close to it as you can without touching,,

Yes, but Yamaha gets to sell more rollers when this happens. They suggest that a dealer stock up on rollers.

That's great but no one knows the roller PN. I managed to find one used but the guy wants to sell the carb and not just the roller. I have a flat spot on mine.

More about no one knowing the part number for the cam roller.

The reason for my question was the PN you mentioned was not referenced in the list that would fit my model. However, I called Yamaha and they said it was OK. Your drawing showed the roller coming thru the cam and mine rolls on the outside edge of the cam. I just hated to spend 5.00 and 6.00 shipping for a part that was different. Thanks for your kind reply.

This roller and part # (besides the pic) was just posted a couple of days ago on another thread.

I actually saved it and the catalogue for future reference.
